Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (300g) peeled and diced Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples
  • 3 tbsp (40g) unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup (65g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp (2g) ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 pinch (1g) salt
  • ½ cup (45g) rolled oats
  • ¼ cup (30g) all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp (40g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 tbsp (25g) brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp (1g) cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Place the diced apples, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the liquid has reduced to a thick, mahogany-colored syrup. Remove from heat and refrigerate until completely cold.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Toast for 3–5 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture smells nutty and looks golden.
